Embrace Equity
International Women’s Day 2023 campaign theme: #EmbraceEquity
For International Women’s Day and beyond, let’s all fully #EmbraceEquity.
Equity isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s a must-have.
A focus on gender equity needs to be part of every society’s DNA.
And it’s critical to understand the difference between equity and equality.
About Embracing Equity
To embrace equity means to actively support and promote fairness and justice in all areas of society, including but not limited to race, gender, sexuality, and socio-economic status.
This can be achieved through various means such as advocating for policies that address systemic biases, promoting diversity and inclusion, and educating oneself and others on issues of equity.
By embracing equity, individuals and organisations can help create a more just and equitable world.
How to Celebrate
Equity in the workplace refers to the idea that all employees should have equal opportunities and fair treatment, regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, or any other personal characteristic.
In a workplace with equity, employees should feel valued, respected, and supported, and have equal access to resources, opportunities, and benefits.
Things your organisation can do.
Education: Take the time to educate yourself and others on issues of equity, such as systemic biases, privilege, and diversity and inclusion.
Advocate for change: Advocate for policies and initiatives that promote equity and address systemic inequalities.
Support diverse communities: Show your support for diverse communities and individuals by participating in events and activities that celebrate their cultures and experiences.
Promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace: Encourage and support diversity and inclusion in the workplace, such as through implementing diversity and inclusion training programs and promoting equal opportunities for all employees.
Donate to organisations that support equity: Support organisations that are working to promote equity and address systemic inequalities, either through financial contributions or volunteering your time.
Celebrate diverse cultures and identities: Take the time to celebrate and learn about diverse cultures and identities, such as through attending cultural events or learning about the experiences of marginalised communities.
Making Change Happen
Creating an equitable workplace can help to promote diversity, reduce discrimination and bias, and increase overall productivity and morale.
To achieve equity in the workplace, companies can implement policies and initiatives that address systemic inequalities and promote diversity and inclusion, such as those related to hiring and promotion, compensation, and employee development.
Additionally, companies can provide training and education to employees on topics such as unconscious bias and cultural competence, and regularly assess and monitor their progress towards creating an equitable workplace.
Training for Equity in the Workplace
Training for equity in the workplace is a critical component in creating a more equitable and inclusive work environment. The following are some examples of types of training that can be beneficial:
Unconscious bias training: This type of training helps employees understand and recognise unconscious biases and how these biases can impact decision-making in the workplace.
Diversity and inclusion training: This type of training educates employees on the importance of diversity and inclusion and provides practical strategies for promoting these values in the workplace.
Cultural competence training: This type of training helps employees to understand and appreciate cultural differences, improve communication and collaboration, and create a more inclusive work environment.
Harassment and discrimination prevention training: This type of training helps employees understand the definitions of harassment and discrimination and how to prevent and address these issues in the workplace.
Micro-inequities training: This type of training helps employees understand the impact of small, everyday instances of bias and discrimination, and how they can take action to address them.
Allyship training: This type of training helps employees understand the importance of being an ally and how they can support underrepresented groups in the workplace.
It’s important for companies to regularly offer this type of training to all employees, including managers and leaders, to help create a culture of equity and inclusion.
Building a New World for the Future Generations
Building a fair and equitable world involves several key components:
Equal access to opportunities and resources: Ensuring that everyone has equal access to education, employment, healthcare, and other essential resources.
Reducing inequality: Addressing the root causes of economic and social inequality, such as systemic discrimination and poverty.
Promoting diversity and inclusion: Encouraging and valuing diversity in all aspects of society, including the workplace, schools, and communities.
Addressing biases: Recognising and addressing implicit biases, stereotypes, and prejudice in all areas of society.
Promoting social justice: Working to eliminate discrimination, oppression, and exploitation and ensure that everyone has the right to live with dignity.
Ensuring equal protection under the law: Protecting the rights and freedoms of all individuals and ensuring that the legal system is fair and impartial.
Building strong, inclusive communities: Promoting strong, inclusive communities where everyone is valued, respected, and able to participate fully.
Encouraging civic engagement: Fostering active and informed citizens who are engaged in the democratic process and working to create a better future for all.
